I hate cleaning with the passion of a thousand suns. Hate it. I have this crazy ass friend who loves cleaning and cleans her house every weekend like she’s supposed to, and while I love her I think that qualifies as batshit crazy.
Unfortunately, since I’m not independently wealthy (goddamn lotto where are you?) I have to do it. I’m not gonna lie – I put it off as long as humanly possible, but I still do it.
One of the things I hate most is mopping. I hate it because I can never find a good mop. When I lived in Italy we had awesome mops, I guess because most of the floors there were marble or tile and they decided they better get the mop thing right or live with janky floors.
I hate a janky floor almost as much as I hate mopping.
My garage is a graveyard of rejected mops. The kind with the sponge head are the worst because they collect only so much schmutz before they get overloaded and then you practically have to shave it to clean the gank off.
I also don’t like the old-fashioned cotton head mops because you have to have one of those huge janitorial-style buckets with a wringer to get the water out and they weigh one thousand pounds when they’re full of water.
This weekend I bought this mop by Mr. Clean.
Another one bites the dust. The wringer doesn’t go all the way down the head, so the last couple of inches of mop stay wet. That’s a problem when I have the mop in the bathroom and have to carry it, dripping cleaning fluid, all through my house so it can mank up my hardwood floors and rugs. Not awesome.
So I’m on a quest peoples. Have you found the perfect mop? Will you share with me the secrets of mop perfection? I’m looking for the holy grail of mops here. It has to have some kind of stringy head (I like the style above) but it has to be fully wringable. I don’t want to have to get a special bucket for it too.
And it needs to have replaceable heads that you can actually find when you need them. I swear they discontinue mops faster than they do lipstick shades and you can never find the head for your mop. It’s how they get you to keep buying new ones, the fuckers. It’s brilliant but skeezy at the same time.
Hit me with your best shot, internetz. I’m desperate here! Rejected mop #547 is currently dripping in my laundry room.

I’m with you on the house cleaning and mopping. I hate mopping because it takes forever to do, and it never gets all the dirt, and you end up seeing extra things on the floor…and gah! I wish I enjoyed cleaning. I sincerely do. *sigh*
My mom had some sort of electric mop that she really likes. It’s one of the floormate things, but I couldn’t tell you which one, and I didn’t pay enough attention to it to see if I liked it. But she does, and they hardly have any carpet in AZ.

@Kyra,
The idea of a gadget to do the mopping is almost too awesome to resist! Unfortunately I promised a friend I would never buy a Roomba because they completely creep her out, and the way my house is laid out I don’t think it would work. What I really need is Rosie from the Jetsons! How awesome would that be?

@floating princess, The roomba is interesting, but the floor mop thing I was telling you about isn’t a robot. It’s like a vacuum for the floor, wet and all. Not cheap though.
Rosie always scared me.

@Kyra,
I’m going to have to look for that! I’ve probably spent the same amount on cheap mops that don’t work.

Like Dawn said- I totally could have typed this post too…and no, I have no solution for you. I know some people who swear by their Swiffer wetjet’s- but they just don’t do it for me.
Good luck!

@Princess of the Universe,
I’ve tried the Swiffer and it’s in the garage where mops go to die. Living in the desert means we have dust and fine sand all the time, and the Swiffer can’t handle it. I need supa-dupa Swiffer action!

We use the Hoover Floormate. Works awesome on the hardwood and lino. Not as happy with the tile because ours is pretty bumpy and nothing seems to get it really clean except literally scrubbing on my hands & knees. I hate, hate, hate mopping and could have never survived living in this almost entirely hardwood house without the Floormate – almost as quick as vacuuming!

I just bought me $21 worth of lottery tickets that should enter me in all sorts of contests for the next 3-7 days. I figure that should do the trick.
