It was so windy here last night I thought my house was going to come unhinged and swirl around in a cloud until it dropped in Oz. Luckily we don’t usually get tornadoes here because that is one weather phenomenon that scares the crapwads out of me. I’ve lived in tornado country several times in my short life and I’m not about to do it again voluntarily.
It made me think back to when I was a child and the Wizard of Oz would come on the television, back in the day when you actually had to wait for them to show a program on TV instead of watching it on DVD or Tivo, and you couldn’t fast-forward through the commercials.
Every year I’d get so excited that it was coming on! I’d wait for days and beg and plead with my mom to watch it. Every year it was the same. The show would come on and everything would be all happy munchkinland goodness until the witch came. The witch would come and I ran screaming from the room. Every. Single. Year. Even though I knew it was coming, she still scared the peewaddins right out of me. I don’t know how long it was before I finally saw the end of that movie but I’m pretty sure I was into the double digits.
Out of all of the “specials” that were on TV back then like the Great Pumpkin, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, the Wizard of Oz still stands out the most for me.
What about you? What was your favorite?

The Wizard of Oz is my favorite and then second I liked all the old Christmas shows!

@Hilly,
I loved all the Christmas shows! Especially Rudolph because I wanted to save all the toys on the Island of Misfit Toys.

The Sound of Music was always my favorite. I got to stay up late, since the movie is like 10 hours long, which was awesome! I still know all of the songs by heart! Oh, and completely agree that tornadoes are terrifying!!! I much prefer earthquakes.

@Jessica,
I never got into the Sound of Music, but my mom liked it which meant we got to stay up late by proxy when it was on. Clever, right?

I LOVED when the Wizard of Oz would come on. Always at Easter, and always a big blue screen announcing it between commercials… not sure why that was. But I liked all the sound of music, rudolph, and peanuts specials (and GARFIELD!) I love the end of the year holiday season. I think the tv folks have sort of lost their minds and really over do the specials now, but once upon a time it was really, really cool.

@Kyra,
I agree. We had something to look forward to back in the day. As soon as the Christmas shows started coming on you knew that vacation was just around the corner. Ahhh, the good old days!
