I had to complete a quest before I could make this dinner. The last time I used my pizza stone it broke when I was putting it away and I almost cried. I love the pizza stone! After all, it was instrumental in making the perfect Pizza Margherita. When I heard the stone shatter my heart did a little flip flop. I had to replace it, and I thought it would be rather easy because they’re a dime a dozen at the Bed Bath & Beyond, right? Not quite.
BB&B didn’t have one. Either did Macy’s or Kohl’s. Linens & Things closed last fall. I could have ordered from Amazon but I’m a very tactile person. I want to touch things, hold them and fondle them before I buy them. Plus I didn’t want to wait. In true Veruca Salt fashion, I wanted it nowwwww.
Besides, I had plans for that stone baby. Calzones were on the menu and I wasn’t going to concede defeat easily, so we went to William Sonoma. Score! It took me a while to find it in the store because it was hidden under the pizza peels on the shelf. The salesperson had to go in the back to find one in a box, but she came back with exactly what I neeed. New pizza stone goodness! This one is heavier than the one I had before. It’s the new and improved model. Tonight was it’s maiden voyage and it didn’t let me down.
The calzones were crunchy on the outside and melty on the inside, with lots of stretchy mozarella and salty prosciutto. I threw in a couple of basil leaves and drizzled a tomato basil sauce over the toppings before sealing them up and sliding them onto the stone.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have achieved yum.
