The other night I was up at 2am surfing like only an insomniac can and I got this wild idea to sign up for a Facebook account. It seems everyone has them, so I figured why not.
I’m not sure why I did this because I’ve already got the Twitter and I hardly ever follow anyone on there because I just feel kind of weird about it, like I should either know someone kind of well or ask permission first before following. So Facebook mined my email and came up with all these people I could request to “friend.” Then it asked me questions about my high school and where I lived, after which it produced another list of people I could friend. I scrolled through the high school list and was struck by several things.
First off, all the girls used their maiden names, or included their maiden name along with their married name. My first reaction was that they were living in the past, but I guess they wanted to be more easily recognizable to people from school. I didn’t think of that when I signed up because I don’t associate myself with that name anymore but I guess it makes sense. I didn’t go back and change mine, though.
The second thing I realized is that yep, I still don’t really want to associate with those people. Sure there are a couple of people on there that it might be cool to hear from again, but for the most part I didn’t fit in with the majority of them and I don’t really get into the “back in the day” conversations anyway.
Since I’m not into the reunion kind of thing, and all of my current friends know how to keep in touch with me in ways other than Facebook, I’m not sure what to do with this now that I have it. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. If you know my full name feel free to look me up. If you don’t but want to add me send me an email and I’ll give you the secret handshake. Just don’t tell my old trainer that I’m on there because he came up in my list of possibilities and all I could think was “I’m not running anymore goddamn stairs!”
