Christmas at my house went a little differently than planned. Christmas Eve morning I woke up with that achy, run-over-by-a-mack-truck feeling and the queasy stomach that lets you know right away you’re going to have a craptastic day.* Since one of the guys at work had the stomach flu last week it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what was wrong. Normally I would be kind of glad for an excuse to lay around whining and begging people to fetch for me, but I had 5 days off IN A ROW and I had plans for those days baby!
Christmas Eve is traditionally our night to have our big family dinner because we like to draw out our holiday as long as possible. We have dinner Christmas Eve, a traditional scrapple breakfast Christmas morning after all the gift festivities, and then dinner at relatives on Christmas night. This year all I could manage for Christmas Eve dinner was to shell the crab I had planned for our pre-dinner cocktails, get out some fresh french bread, and we had crab cocktails and french bread for dinner. Well, they did. I had bread.
Christmas morning was the first time my 17 year old has been up before 10am voluntarily in a year. He was sitting on the couch with his stocking when I got up. He’s so grown up so much of the time it’s nice to be reminded that he’s still a kid sometimes! Mostly he was excited about the Wii we got for our family gift. He couldn’t wait to break it out and get it all set up. It’s a good thing – hub and I would still be trying to figure it out if he wasn’t here! It’s times like this when I feel old! You should see the two of us trying to play these games! It’s pretty funny, in a short bus kind of way.
I’m still feeling kind of punky today, but it’s getting better. Just in time for my days off to be all used up! It’s ok, I’ll have more next week. I usually enjoy New Year’s week more than Christmas week because I actually relax during New Years since all the bustle of Christmas is over.
One of these years I will be successful in orchestrating a holiday without madness, but this wasn’t that year. There were some missing people, there was family BS, and there was a major FedEx fail. Still, we had a nice holiday together and that’s what counts.
* Craptastic – get it?
